Ready in Christ

“Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes.”
Luke 12:37 (ESV)

As one-year closes and another begins, Jesus calls His people to watchfulness. Not the anxious watchfulness of fear, but the faithful watchfulness of trust. “Stay dressed for action,” He says. “Keep your lamps burning.” These words remind us that our lives are lived before God, not merely measured by calendars and clocks.

Looking back on the past year, we see clearly that we have not always been watchful. We have grown distracted, spiritually tired, and at times forgetful of God’s Word. We have delayed repentance and assumed there would always be more time. The Law of God exposes this truth—not to condemn us, but to awaken us.

Yet the heart of Jesus’ teaching is not warning alone. It is comfort.

The Master who is coming is the same Lord who has already come for us. Astonishingly, Jesus says that when He returns, He will serve His servants. This is not the way of the world, but it is the way of Christ. He is the Lord who knelt to wash feet, who bore sin on the cross, and who rose from the dead to give life to the world.

This same Jesus continues to serve us now. In Holy Baptism, He has clothed us with His righteousness. In His Word, He forgives and strengthens us. In the Lord’s Supper, He feeds us with His own body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. Through these means of grace, our lamps are kept burning—not by our effort, but by His faithfulness.

As the new year begins, being “ready” does not mean resolving to improve ourselves. It means resting in Christ. We are ready because we belong to Him. Our future is secure because our Savior is faithful.

So, we step into the coming year in peace. The Lord who has carried us through the past year will carry us still. And the One who comes to us now in grace will one day come again in glory. Amen.

Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, as we end one year and begin another, keep us watchful in faith. Forgive our sins, strengthen us by Your Word and Sacraments, and grant us peace as we await Your coming. Amen.

Listos en Cristo

“Bienaventurados aquellos siervos a quienes su señor, cuando venga, halle velando.”
Lucas 12:37 (RVR 1960)

Al terminar un año y comenzar otro, Jesús llama a su pueblo a la vigilancia. No a la vigilancia ansiosa del temor, sino a la vigilancia fiel de la confianza. “Estén ceñidos para la acción”, Él dice. “Mantengan sus lámparas encendidas”. Estas palabras nos recuerdan que nuestras vidas se viven delante de Dios, no simplemente medidas por calendarios y relojes.

Al mirar atrás al año pasado, vemos con claridad que no siempre hemos estado vigilantes. Nos hemos distraído, nos hemos cansado espiritualmente y, en ocasiones, hemos olvidado la Palabra de Dios. Hemos postergado el arrepentimiento y hemos asumido que siempre habría más tiempo. La Ley de Dios expone esta verdad, no para condenarnos, sino para despertarnos.

Sin embargo, el corazón de la enseñanza de Jesús no es solo advertencia. Es consuelo.

El Señor que viene es el mismo Señor que ya ha venido por nosotros. De manera asombrosa, Jesús dice que cuando Él regrese, servirá a sus siervos. Este no es el modo del mundo, pero sí es el modo de Cristo. Él es el Señor que se arrodilló para lavar pies, que cargó con el pecado en la cruz y que resucitó de entre los muertos para dar vida al mundo.

Este mismo Jesús continúa sirviéndonos ahora. En el Santo Bautismo, nos ha vestido con su justicia. En su Palabra, nos perdona y nos fortalece. En la Cena del Señor, nos alimenta con su propio cuerpo y sangre para el perdón de los pecados. Por medio de estos medios de gracia, nuestras lámparas se mantienen encendidas, no por nuestro esfuerzo, sino por su fidelidad.

Al comenzar el nuevo año, estar “listos” no significa proponernos mejorarnos a nosotros mismos. Significa descansar en Cristo. Estamos listos porque le pertenecemos a Él. Nuestro futuro es seguro porque nuestro Salvador es fiel.

Así, entramos al año venidero en paz. El Señor que nos ha sostenido durante el año pasado nos seguirá sosteniendo. Y Aquel que viene ahora a nosotros en gracia, un día vendrá de nuevo en gloria. Amén.

Oración
Señor Jesucristo, al terminar un año y comenzar otro, mantennos vigilantes en la fe. Perdona nuestros pecados, fortalécenos por medio de tu Palabra y Sacramentos, y concédenos tu paz mientras aguardamos tu venida. Amén.
